The catalyst for the wonderful new opportunity set in crypto is the GENIUS Act, which is a gift from the Gods for the asset management industry. Let’s rehearse why that is.
- Stablecoins Legitimized. The Act gives stablecoins its blessing, which means there is an on/off ramp for US dollar value to be ported across to markets denominated in crypto. Stablecoin collateral comes in the form of US dollars and/or US Treasuries, so, all other things being equal, demand for dollars and Treasuries should also rise as stablecoins proliferate. This is a way of extending dollar dominance.
- Blockchains Institutionalized. The larger and more established blockchains are now acceptable databases of record for the asset management industry. Due to their ability to store more fields than the Bitcoin blockchain, Ethereum and Solana are likely to benefit disproportionately.
- Tokenization Accelerated. Tokenization - which means creating digitized claims on ownership and/or other rights as regards assets - has already begun, but the GENIUS Act brings this into the mainstream. People have not realized it yet, but this amounts to the creation of an entirely parallel set of financial plumbing. Tokenizing illiquid untradeable assets is as big of a deal now as the creation of the joint-stock company was then. It is and will in my view continue to be way less regulated than the current financial architecture, and this is great news for asset owners, brokers, custodians, everyone on the supply side.
